E pele o[hello people]
.- oto ojo meta [it’s been a while].
- gbogbo ile nko o?[how is your family?]
- Se ise nlo dede? [I hope work is going well?]
I have been off for a while; I have missed blogging and all the wonderful people on SC.
Above is how we greet where I come from, especially when it’s been a while like this-I have interpreted it accordingly.
This series of images LATI9JA [from Nigeria] was birth from a very humorous incident.
A week before I made these images, I was arrested by the police and detained for taking photos-you don’t want to know it’s some clumsy and neverheardbefore offence that I was charged with-TAKING PHOTOS ON THE STREET AT NIGHT. Afterwards my camera alone was held in custody for about 24hours. I had actually travelled to visit my parents ,so for the rest of the days I spent with them, my mother grounded me[lol] and appealed to me not go about with my camera,ok.I tried so hard to hold myself but on the 3rd day I just had to shoot something, so I came up with this idea to do some self portraits, I didn’t have any tripods or remote controls…..well the rest is some tale that is rather too funny to describe, I got stones ,sticks on the floor, whatever I could find to hold my camera…and there you have it my self-portraits-without my face[intentional].
further as I looked at the image I thought it looked like some fashion advert, so I decided to come up with a name and … and…and…start a fashion line by the name LATI9JA, for starters we’ll stock other designers and in about a year we’ll begin to produce our own pants which will be sold under the label LATI9JA.The store is going to be in Lagos, Nigeria. I find this whole thing really interesting.
